Every day, millions of New Yorkers wait too long for buses and trains

Time wasted on subway platforms and bus stops is time lost with family, at work, getting an education, and securing healthcare. We’re fighting for 6-minute service all day, every day to give riders their time back and build a more sustainable public transit system.

#6MinuteService would save riders precious time and bring more of the city within reach from every neighborhood.

What we’re fighting for

Bus and subway service is more unpredictable than ever. Too many riders are facing wait times of 10, 15, 20 minutes and more, particularly on weekends and outside of the 9-to-5 rush.

We’re calling on Governor Hochul to improve transit service for the people who rely on it every day by running subways and most buses at least every six minutes, every day of the week. By making a targeted investment of up to $300 million in the next state budget, Governor Hochul can deliver #6MinuteService and make faster transit possible for all New Yorkers.

Why it matters

Our public transit service is not meeting the needs of today’s riders. Public transit service needs to be reimagined to fit the diverse needs of travelers who are more likely to be traveling in the outer boroughs and during early mornings, late nights, and weekends, in addition to maintaining frequent and reliable peak service.

Infrequent service leaves riders waiting longer, costing them time, anxiety, and sometimes even the cost of an Uber. Long waits give people a reason not to ride transit at all, taking away from the safety in numbers that made our subway system so safe for a generation. Because of travel patterns, women, people of color, and low-income workers are more likely to face infrequent service. Six-minute service means more riders, happier riders, and safer riders.

More frequent service is also essential to helping New York reach the ambitious climate goals it dearly needs to meet. Without transit, our regional greenhouse gas emissions would be 30% higher. Leveraging our extensive public transit network is essential to meeting our climate goals, and that means getting people out of cars by making transit travel times more competitive.

This is a critical moment for Governor Hochul to make a targeted investment in transit riders and the future of our city. View our #6MinuteService coalition and read our report, 6 Reasons New Yorkers Need #6MinuteService.

“Six minute service would be life changing for millions of New Yorkers, including myself. I live 20 minutes from the subway and commuting can be a nightmare — it’s no surprise most people in my neighborhood own a car.

With six minute service, I could get to school and work on time, I could go see friends or family, it would make commuting so much less stressful.”
