Be A COMMUNITY ORGANIZING intern!
The Riders Alliance is a grass roots organization of subway and bus riders dedicated to winning better public transit in New York. We organize our fellow passengers to win concrete improvements in transit service and to advocate with our elected officials for affordable fares, better service and stronger public investment in mass transit. We place an extra emphasis on low-income communities of color that disproportional carry the burden of our failing transportation system.
The Community Organizing Intern will work with our organizers to conduct community outreach in targeted neighborhoods around New York City. In addition, the intern will attend monthly formal community organizing training workshops.
The intern will develop skills in:
- community outreach and membership recruitment
- relationship building and leadership training
- issue campaign selection and execution
- organizational development
- campaign research
- database management
- working with low-income communities of color
Applicants must be committed to social change and interested in learning about community organizing practices, transportation policy, and diverse communities around New York City. Applicants must be excellent with people, a strong communicator, detail-oriented, timely, flexible, and able to identify sources of inequity. The ideal candidate is a hardworking person of color from the communities in which we are organizing. We strongly encourage applications from people of color, women, immigrants, indigenous people, LGBT people, and other traditionally oppressed communities.
To apply, please prepare a resume and a short statement highlighting your experience working with communities of color, your commitment to social justice, and your interest in engaging community members around issues of transportation. All applications should be sent to our Deputy Director, Nick Sifuentes, at email@example.com
