Internships

Be our Fall COMMUNITY ORGANIZING intern!

Riders Alliance is looking for dedicated, passionate interns for the Fall of 2013.

The Riders Alliance is a grass roots organization of subway and bus riders dedicated to winning better public transit in New York. We organize our fellow passengers to win concrete improvements in transit service and to advocate with our elected officials for affordable fares, better service and stronger public investment in mass transit.

The Community Organizing Intern will work with our organizers to conduct community outreach in targeted neighborhoods around New York City.  In addition, the intern will attend monthly formal community organizing training workshops.

The intern will develop skills in:

  • community outreach and membership recruitment
  • relationship building and leadership training
  • issue campaign selection and execution
  • grass-roots fundraising and organizational development
  • campaign research
  • database management

Applicants must be committed to social change and interested in learning about community organizing practices, transportation policy, and diverse communities around New York City. Applicants must be excellent with people, a strong communicator, thoughtful, detail-oriented, timely, flexible, culturally competent and able to identify sources of inequity. We strongly encourage applicants who can read, write, and speak  Spanish.

The internship is a three month (semester long) commitment; specific hours and dates can be tailored to a successful applicant. This is an unpaid internship but we reimburse for all internship-related travel.

To apply, submit a 1-page cover letter and a 1-page resume to Senior Organizer J.Anthony Holbert at j.anthony@ridersny.org; please use subject line “Internship Application.”  There is a stipend and travel will be reimbursed. Applications will be accepted until Monday, August 26th 2013.
