The Politics of Fare Hikes

Without help from Albany, riders are asked to pay more money for less service.

The buzz this week has been about the proposed fare hikes released on Monday.

As Straphangers spokesman Gene Russianoff, blogger Ben Kabak (both Riders Alliance board members) and the New York Times editorial board all point out, the real solution to the MTA funding crisis lies not in squeezing riders for even more change but in strengthening the MTA’s funding over the long term, something only our representatives in Albany can achieve.

Ben credits the “growing chorus of voices calling for more state support”–a chorus that includes Riders Alliance members, as we organize in neighborhoods around New York.
